Free First Aid For Disadvantaged Parents At Newport Library

The Sisterhood Project is offering free Baby and Child First Aid training to three disadvantaged parents at a Newport course on 23 April 2022.

Baby and Child First Aid is an essential skill that can mean the difference between life and death when your child is injured, but is not affordable and accessible to everyone.

Victoria’s emergency services are under more pressure than ever with people waiting more than three times as long as they should to be connected to emergency services. Since October, more than twelve people, including four children, have died after waiting up to 16 minutes to reach an operator, some failing to be connected to Triple Zero at all.

Grace Larson, Paediatric Intensive Care Nurse and Co-Founder of The Sisterhood Project said while nothing excuses these tragic incidents, First Aid and CPR are skills people can learn that could potentially save a life.

“First Aid training is widely available in Victoria, but it can be very expensive. Courses start at around $90 and some can be as high as $140. For some people, that cost is far too high when they can barely afford to pay for housing, food and other essential items,” Grace said.

The first few minutes following an accident are critical. First Aid can provide parents with the skills to stabilise their child until emergency medical services arrive, and could prevent rapid deterioration, ultimately saving their life.

“Throughout my career I have seen first-hand the huge impact knowing First Aid can have on the survival of infants and children,” Grace said.

“I have also seen the unfair disadvantage many low income and vulnerable parents have when it comes to affording this training. That is why we started The Sisterhood Project, so we can make a real difference in the outcome of childhood injuries,” she said.

The Sisterhood Project is in the process of becoming a charity, currently raising funds so they can incorporate as a foundation.

They are offering free training with the funds they have raised so far to start helping disadvantaged parents and carers as soon as possible.
