Female Charity Founder Up For Rural Women’s Award
Founder of The Sisterhood Project, Grace Larson, is a Victorian finalist in the 2023 AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award.
The Rural Women’s Award empowers and celebrates the inclusive and courageous leadership of women involved in Australia’s rural and emerging industries, businesses, and communities.
The Victorian winner will be announced in April and, if successful, Grace will receive $15,000 towards The Sisterhood Project and represent Victoria at the National Award.
Grace formed The Sisterhood Project in 2022 with her sister Skye as a way to make infant and child first aid more affordable and accessible for parents and carers.
“If we increase the number of parents and carers with this knowledge, particularly in rural areas, we can save many children’s lives and limit preventable accidents,” Grace said.
The Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit’s Hazard report reveals that child (0-14 years) injury related death rates in outer regional areas of Victoria are four times higher than those in major cities.
The first few minutes following an accident are critical. First Aid can provide parents with the skills to stabilise their child until emergency medical services arrive, and could prevent rapid deterioration, ultimately saving their life.
“First Aid training is widely available in Victorian cities, but less so in regional and remote areas of Victoria,” Grace said.
“Courses can also be very expensive. They start at around $90 and some can be as high as $140. For some people, that cost is far too high when they can barely afford to pay for housing, food and other essential items,” She said.
“The Sisterhood Project aims to offer free infant and child first aid courses to parents and carers that can’t afford them and have less access to them,” Grace said.
The Sisterhood Project is in the early stages of becoming a charity and is keen to start helping disadvantaged parents and carers as soon as possible.
